E00

ESRI ASCII interchange format

This is a format for transferring feature files. It is a bulky ASCII (text) format, so typically after exporting to E00 format, you will compress the file with pkzip or gzip.

It seemed stupid to me to use this format at first, because it's an ESRI format. Why not just use ESRI shapefiles and be done with it?

Additional information can be carried along in E00 files. So when you export files from ArcMap (for instance) you are bundling up additional information.

Now all I have to do is look up what the other attributes are... I think the projection and coordinate system settings come along for the ride.
