This category is an umbrella for everything message related, including machine-to-machine (M2M) protocols like MQTT and related software like RabbitMQ, notifications systems including the one I am rolling together using Telegram, and person-to-person communications like SMS or WhatsApp (or Telegram).
A list of instant messaging systems that I am not particularly interested in using right now include
- Facebook Messenger - it's Facebook, no idea how it works, and don't want to know
- Google Chat or whatever they call it this week
- Instagram - ho hum another one
- Twitter - tried it for notifications but it's kind of clunky for this
- WhatsApp (Facebook) - Too many hoops to jump through to use its API
