Mapserver and SVG

I can change a .map file to generate SVG as output. See http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/docs/howto/svg-howto/?searchterm=SVG for an example on how to do this.

What does SVG output buy me?

The compressed output is not working with this Ubuntu packaged 4.6 mapserver. I am building the latest mapserver from sources right now.
