Elevation profiles

Overview
- I want to generate elevation profiles for bike routes / bike paths.
- I also want to generate those nifty chevrons that indicate grades on routes.
Generating a profile
ArcMap script: This this Python script would be a starting point to generate the graphics.
Of course there is a way to make a profile in 3D analyst.
Setting up the map
I need an elevation layer.
