2017-May - The original toner cartridge is finally empty. I ordered a replacement Brother TN660 from eBay for about $45 including shipping. The same cartridge is $75 in the local Office Depot. There are third party cartridges for about $20 but that scares me off.
Set up notes
I want to be able to print from the Macs, using Bellman to spool the output to a USB connected printer. For months I have been running upstairs with the Mac in my hands to print things. It was good exercise but kind of a pain, and I am afraid one day I will drop the Mac down the stairs.
The printer is plugged into my Linux server, Bellman. When you plug a USB printer in, it will become visible in CUPS (the printing system); the trick is to set it up correctly.
The mistake for this printer is to go to Brother and try to download and install their special Linux printer driver, which does not work.
What did work was to go into CUPS (https://bellman.wildsong.biz:631/) and alter the printer settings. Instead of trying to set it to be a "Brother" printer, set the printer to RAW mode on Bellman. This means the codes coming from the remote computer (Macs, generally) will simply pass through Bellman and be sent to the printer.
MACS
Then use the correct Brother driver on the MAC.
- Open System Preferences -> Printers
- Delete any existing Brother printer
- Add the printer "Brother laser printer RAW queue @ bellman"
- First let it default to "Generic PostScript Driver"
- Then select the Brother HL-L2320D driver under "Use".
If you don't select the driver manually on the Mac side then printouts will go into Bellman's queue and just disappear.

- Click "the printer I wanted isn't listed"
- Use an IPP URL like this, http://192.168.123.2:631/printers/Brother
